Xoli Nkosi, from the streets of Duduza, is the young man who is well on his way to hitting the music industry by storm. Proud of his style of music, which he terms “Loxion Pop” Xoli describes his music as a sound fit for all types of people and ages. He plays versatile sounds from fusion, gospel, pop, soul to afro pop and his sounds has influences from mbaqanga and maskandi.
Where has this man been hiding, you may ask. Xoli, 29, born in a musical family with siblings who are as gifted as he is musically, started his public singing career whilst at school at the tender age of 14. Determined as he was, Xoli joined the church choir where he observed and later took over the role of musical director in church. He describes himself as more of a musical writer than a performer even though he excels in both.
Having played for big names like the late Sipho Gumede and Sakhile, Xoli is clearly destined for bigger things. As a young boy he together with his 5 friends formed a band in those days known as ‘Panacea’ with whom he participated in musical competitions like Vuka Tsoga and Rand Water musical competitions.
After he matriculated, when his friends decided to go to varsity, Xoli decided to follow his passion and enrolled with the Gauteng Music Academy in Daveyton, later with FUBA and then continued to Natal University.
Talking about his debut album, Xoli couldn’t hide the sense of pride with which he spoke about this project. Having written all of the 12 songs in this album, he found it very difficult to chose from the 20 songs he had lined up for his first ever album. The album recorded by Sheer Sound and produced by Andy Narrell of American origin, will make the kwaito musos run for their money. The album whose title is Sangena has songs that every one of his fans will enjoy and relate to. From the young at heart to the golden oldies. “I’ve seen people responding to my music in all the live performances I’ve done, and this makes me confident that they will enjoy this album”
The highlights in Xoli’s musical career included performances at the Nelson Mandela Inauguration, performances with the Joyous Celebration 2 & 3 projects, and various other ANC functions. He will definitely mesmerize your guests at your wedding with his Afro soul sounds and is versatile enough to play at corporate functions as well.
